Chapter 2: Supporting Student Content Learning

Central Idea of Chapter-- The overall concept of Chapter 2 is about adapting technology in the classroom. It gives examples of tools and activities to be used in the classroom to intergrade technological concepts in grades K-12 while still supporting the content and standards in the Georgia Performace system. It even gives ideas to those teachers who may only have one computer available to them in the classroom. The basic stages that the students should go through in a technology-supported learning process are understanding, assessing, engaging, and evaluating. The chapter gives ways for the students to go through these steps.

GPS Tie-in-- Science standards as well as Reading and Language Arts can be tied into this chapter. The book gives supporting examples of activities to be done with students concerning these topics using smart boards, diagrams from Kidspirations software programs, and more. In this chapter on page 39 in the green box titled "Meeting the Standards". Here the chapter lists the content standards from NETS.

3 Applicable Technology Resources-- The three resources that I'd apply in my classroom is the Kidspiration Software program from page 40, the use of electronic and digital label makers in the classroom, and interactive websites such as the Human Anatomy Online provided on page 55.

Chapter 3: Supporting Student Communication

Central Idea of Chapter-- Main topics in this chapter is the role that technology plays in communication in the classroom. The text states that students are usually more attentive and responsive with tasks when the tasks involve somethings that is collaborative with a computer than assignments without a computer. I believe this is true because students in this generation are more interested in technology whatever it may be concerning. Students are more willing to communicate through messengers and other tools via the internet. This chapter provides tools and ideas to use thses messengers and etc. in lessons and activities for the classroom.

GPS Tie-in-- The main Georgia Performance Standard tie in this chapter deals with communication, Launguage Arts/ the written language. Students can become aware of internet tools such as bloggers and other websites to learn and discuss their different interests. The chapter shows ways this topic can be collaborative with other subject matter such as Social Studies and discussion about other worldly interests, and Science with educational sites such as Mad Science. Also, on page 66 in the green box titled "Meeting the Standards" the chapter address the technological standards concerning the fine arts and foreign language.

3 Applicable Technology Resources-- One resource that I will try to use in my own classroom is the Youth website that allows students to communicate their voice and opinions at I also found the "Multidisciplinary Site- iEarn" that is a popular way for students to enhance their concepts of worldly differences. It seems like a very unique place where students can go for Social Studies projects, also a good teacher resources. I also think that using Yahoo, or MSN messenger is a good idea if used appropriately. I had never thought of those kind of messengers being educational, but it would be a great way to "bring guests" into the classroom.

Chapter 4: Supporting Student Critical Thinking

Central Idea of Chapter-- The main idea of this chapter is to assist students in developing higher-level thinking. This chapter expresses the importance of students' ability to use problem solving and critical thinking. The chapter states that when one using technology, being able to think critically allow you to: judge the credibility of sources; identify conclusions, reasons, and assumptions; judge the quality of an argument, including the acceptability of its reasons, assumptions, and evidence; and more.

GPS Tie-in-- These are standards that tie into our regular curriculum as well as tie into the NETS standards. In this chapter on page 100 in the green box titled "Meeting the Standards", the text adds that these techniques of critical thinking will enhance student development in several areas, such as music analysis, visual arts, math enhancement, English and literacy communications, and more.

3 Applicable Technology Resources-- Tools and technological resources that I might use from this particular chapter would be the idea for manipulating Microsoft Excel for use in the classroom. Another resources that I found interesting is the "Reason!Able" software for kids. I love anything that makes learning fun. Also, the "Frist Step KidSkills" software sounds excellent, and it is free!

Chapter 5:Supporting Student Creativity

Central Idea of Chapter-- The idea of this chapter is the let the readers know how very important students' work means to them. Our students will make things in our class and it is important that we realize the amount of ownership involved. Our students put a piece of themselves in their creativivty and as teachers we should embrace that. The chapter says that teachers should expect the students to be flexible, fluent, original, and elaborative in creating their work. There are several technological tools that allow students to express their creativity.

GPS Tie-in-- These programs and tools provided in this chapter can collaborate with any Georgia Performance Standard, but more specifically it can be tied into Social Studies with a Map designing graphic software, or English and Language Arts with story publishing software. In this chapter on page 129 in the green box titled "Meeting the Standards" the text adds the context of creativity in the classroom and adapting it to real life situations.

3 Applicable Technology Resources-- Tools and technological resources that I'd use from this chapter that would allow my students to express their uniqueness and creativity are power-point presentations, puzzle makers, podcasts and video making softwares. These programs are great ways to allow students to be on task, make a creation that is their own, and still be working on a standard base activity.

Chapter 6: Supporting Student Problem Solving

Central Idea of Chapter-- This chapter is intended to enhance students problem solving skills by looking into the ideas about inquiry, problem-based learning techniques, and challenges for the teacher and student. The chapter also lists helpful characteristics of effective technology-enhanced problem-based learning tasks, benefits of problem solving, the problem-solving process, and inquiry techniques. Overall, this has been the most helpful chapter so far.

GPS Tie-in-- There are tools, lesson activities, and case questions are appropriate for Georgia Performance Standards and NETS. There is also a green box on page 156 titled "Meeting the Standards" that confirms that this chapter directs its content to deal with applying problem solving in subjects like English, Math, and technology developments.

3 Applicable Technology Resources-- There were a few tools and technological resources that I found quite useful. One is the "Science Court" program that seems to involve the students and keep their interest while teaching them valuable information in science subject matter. Another resource I noticed is the web-based tool for virtual field trips on page 168. The Web Inquiry Project tool from seems like a great standards based online resource.

Chapter 7: Supporting Student Production

Central Idea of Chapter-- The main idea portrayed in this chapter deals with supporting technology in the K-12 school systems. This is an interesting chapter, that discusses the different characteristics of effective productive tasks, examples of those, and how students benefit from these productions. This chapter is a good explanation of the teachers' roles and how to conduct these productions in a classroom.

GPS Tie-in-- This chapter, as were the others, is a chapter with examples, tools, and activities that are all modeled for the standard curriculum. In this chapter on page 182, in the green text box titled "Meeting the Standards", the text mentions that these techniques delt with in this section will help students develop an understanding for technological design, creation, model, develop and report these prodcution in all subject matter. NETS standards are also mentioned here, and the NT.K-13.3.

3 Applicable Technology Resources-- The chapter lists several tools and software that are considered "production tools". Microsoft Word and Word Perfect, Power-Point and KidPix, iMovie, and Windows Movie Maker. I am familiar with these tools and feel confident that I will use them as a resource in my classroom.

Chapter 8: Supporting Student eLearning

Central Idea of Chapter-- The main idea of thise chapter about "eLearning" or or electronic learning that means involving technology in the enviroments of our classrooms. The text in this chapter is very precise in describing have to enhance teaching with electronic support. It mentions the characteristics of people who are labled eLearners with context and scenarios. It also describes the many benefits of being an eLearner, like flexibility and control of situations, responsibility, exposure to different technologies, and more. One thing that is also very interesting is that this chapter also goes into detail of the different disadvantages of eLearning.

GPS Tie-in-- Many links to the standards can be made with this chapter. In the text on page 2008 in the green box titled "Meeting the Standards" declares that there can be links made from this content to guidlines in curriculum, intstructional design, teacher quality, student roles, assessment, management & support, and technological infrastructure.

3 Applicable Technology Resources-- Several tools are listed in this chapter such as digital libraries, web pages for quizes, and the Packetville program. Another thing that I found very useful and practical for my future classroom from this chapter is Social Studies ePortfolio with resources such as electronic rubrics and more. The last tool that I want to mention from this section is the online resource,
